SAT Math Exam Tips

Getting good marks in the SAT math exam requires hard work, concentration, enrolling in a top rated online training course and knowing the specifics of how to maximize your results. Doing well is not just a matter of studying as hard as you can for as long as possible. Hard work is required, but equally important is working smart. Here are a few tips to help you to do really well in SAT math:

  • Focus your efforts. This is done by adopting a 2-pronged approach to the learning. The first is to know your starting point. That will be how you did in the practice examinations. This will give you an idea of where you are strong and where you are not so strong. Obviously, it is the not so strongareas that require the most attention, but do not become overconfident and ignore the areas where you have done well. If you do not continue to practice your strengths, they can rapidly become weaknesses. The other part of the approach is to give more time to the areas that are most heavily tested. In recent years, there have been a few select areas that have accounted for over half the math exam content. These keep changing but if you have enrolled with an online tuition center, the tutors will be able to give you up-to-date information on the key areas.
  • Do not be in a hurry. An important part of your preparation is to keep timing yourself in your practice tests. Losing track of time and rushing to catch up will lead to thoughtless mistakes that could be the difference between success and failure. At times you may solve a problem but find that the answer is not among the available choices. If you have noted down each step that you took to solve the problem, it will be easy to go back and find where you went wrong and much faster than starting again from the beginning.
  • Know your resources. A reference sheet is part of each answer booklet. Spending a length of time reviewing the material contained in it will reduce the time you have for your answers. If you have studied the reference sheets in advance, you will be able to quickly understand how to use the equations and diagrams. Also, always use a calculator you are familiar with. The layout and keys of a new one will make it easy for mistakes to be made.
  • Know what to skip over. There will be questions that you are not sure of answering correctly. Circle these and go on to the next one. You can return to these once the easier ones are done. If you think you can guess the answer, do so, but also circle the answer number so that you know this is where you have taken a chance and if time is available, you can re-think your guesswork.
  • Practice. Keep doing practice tests. Not just to test your knowledge, but also to increase your familiarity with the whole examination process. The more you practice, the fewer the surprises when you actually do the examination.

There is more that you can do to improve your SAT math results. Talk to your tutors and ask their advice on what specific steps you should take.
